Birthday Blessings

Instead of counting candles,
Or tallying the years,
Contemplate your blessings now,
As your birthday nears.

Consider special people
Who love you, and who care,
And others who’ve enriched your life
Just by being there.

Think about the memories
Passing years can never mar,
Experiences great and small
That have made you who you are.

Another year is a happy gift,
So cut your cake, and say,
“Instead of counting birthdays,
I count blessings every day!”

By Joanna Fuchs

I came across this poem and thought it was perfect. This is my first birthday without my mom, who passed in January. This is the first birthday where the family hasn’t all gotten together for various reasons. This birthday marks, with the realtor dropping off papers signed and sealed, the next chapter of my life, which includes a new place, a new home.

Birthdays can be a day of or time of tension, but only if we look at the glass as half empty and we see the clouds, rain forgetting there is the beauty of the sun, the rainbow after the rain and the clouds. Whatever life has thrown at us, each birthday is a change to begin anew. I am looking at this birthday in that way, despite loss, fibromyalgia keeping me in pain every day. I look at the blessings, and there are blessings, thus once again a chance to start over, reset life, hopefully the reset is one this year, where everything falls into place for a long time to come.
